what is subtractive painting?

Each oil wash painting in my collection is composed of multiple layers of paint. I apply thin washes of oil paint to the entire surface of the piece, then strategically subtract paint with erasers. I repeat the process over and over and until I have achieved a rich value in the work. The contemporary result allows for a depth of color unlike traditional oil applications. Some paintings have as many as 12 different color washes, some works are monochromatic, others reflect a prism of colors, all have a touch of eraser dust in them. - Heather
