Bio
Heather L. Young, lives and works just outside of her hometown of Savannah, Georgia. Formally trained in illustration at the Savannah College of Art & Design, she draws inspiration from her coastal southern heritage and love for moss-draped live oak trees.
Heather’s delicate pen and ink drawings explore both the linear elements of architecture and the more organic forms found in southern flora. She has detailed the sprawling branches of live oaks from across the southeast, and her work can be found in collections both nationally and abroad.
While she enjoys the technical aspects of drawing, her heart lies in painting. In 2019 she returned to the form with a solo show, CANOPY. The exhibition introduced collectors to her unique oil wash painting technique. She applies thin layers of paint to the entire surface, then carefully subtracts with erasers until she achieves a rich value. The contemporary result allows for a depth of color and surface texture, unlike traditional oil applications.
Heather serves on the executive board of the non-profit, Arts on the Coast. She’s also a contributing arts writer for Reflections Magazine.
When she’s not in the studio, Heather enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons exploring the ever-changing landscape of the Lowcountry.
